Hakshiva Homework Center = Success Center

One of the biggest challenges we face as parents is helping our children succeed in school. To help parents and kids in this area, Hakshiva is proud to have recently opened our Homework Center.

Over the past year, 73 elementary school girls have benefited from the services of the center in order to learn effective study skills and receive personalized assistance with their homework and test preparation in their most challenging subjects. The feedback from students, parents and teachers has been overwhelmingly positive. After only one year of activity, it’s clear that the Homework Center is meeting a need by ensuring girls succeed in school.

The way the center operates is simple and very effective. Each participating child is assigned a tutor. A key component of the center is that the tutors are all trained educators with education degrees. Each student meets with her tutor twice a week after school for 45 minutes in a welcoming, quiet atmosphere. Individualized attention and guidance are the keys that unlock academic success for so many girls. And there is always some nosh!

The staff of the Homework Center often communicate directly with the participants’ schools and teachers, which ensures that the tutor has a full understanding of the topics or study skills each girl needs help with. “Doing better on homework and tests means the whole school experience improves for a child,” explains Mrs. Yarmish. “Strengthening and learning new study skills allows students to build success and confidence in school. This will positively impact their lives for years to come.”

The Homework Center is directed by Mrs. Nechamah Pessi Yarmish. Mrs. Yarmish grew up in Ramat Beit Shemesh and saw the need for an initiative to help girls succeed in school. She is an experienced teacher in the Israeli school system and has a degree in education and special education. The center opened with four students in the summer of 2015 and has grown exponentially over the past year. Requests for a similar boys’ program have started to come from parents, and efforts are being made to meet this need as well. We look forward to the Homework Center being able to serve even more local children once additional funding is in place.
